WORLD SCIENCE DAY FOR PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT

Proclaimed by the UNESCO in 2001, the World Science Day for Peace and Development (WSDPD) celebrates the benefits of science worldwide annually on 10^thNovember.  It was during the World Conference on Science in Budapest in 1999, that UNESCO realised the need to come up with a day that bridges the gap and misconception between science and society.

Established WSDPD in 2001, UNESCO continuously works with people, government agencies, other organisations and stakeholders to promote this day and offers an opportunity to educate societies on the relevance of science to their daily lives and human existence as well as encourage public to support the development and advancement of science.

In this sense, a World Science Day for Peace and Development offers an opportunity to strengthen public awareness on the role of science for peaceful and sustainable societies. It promotes national and international solidarity for a shared science between countries, renews national and international commitment for the use of science as well as draws attention to the challenges faced in science by raising public support for the scientific endeavour. This day also pays a tribute to the noble role of scientists in making the attainment of sustainable tomorrow possible. These aims become the significant roots and rationale of celebrating World Science Day for Peace and Development until today.

We, at the World Assembly of Youth (WAY) recognise and understand the imperative roles of science in today societies and the importance to engage young people in the relevance of science in their daily lives for the betterment of the society. We also believe that World Science Day for Peace and Development is a great scheme established by UNESCO as it highlights not only the contributions of science but also awareness to the public on the developments and progress made.

In fact, science is the answer of most of issues encountered by the society, youth inclusive, such as poverty, health issue or even youth unemployment.
