Mr Yusmadi Yusoff (Chairman, RIGHTS Foundation) spoke on the welcoming remarks. He talked about the purpose of the conference, how they came up with the idea to organize the conference and introduction of RIGHTS Foundation.

 

Malaysia’s chairmanship of ASEAN (2015) is happening during exciting and challenging times. Expectations can be quite overwhelming as it straddles between political and economic considerations. Addressing issues related to the economic and socio-cultural pillars will be at the top of Malaysia’s list of priorities. Nonetheless, Malaysia must also discuss concerns that are political and security oriented. It must be balance hard and soft issues.

H.E Prof Dr Makarim Wibisono (Former Executive Director ASEAN Foundation) spoke about the future of ASEAN & Its challenges. Research found that the ASEAN Community have a larger total population compared to European Union. The total population of ASEAN Community are 580 million.Stanford CDDRL-Rights Conference “ASEAN-OSCE 2015: Reflections On A Year Of Chairmanship” was organized by RIGHTS Foundation in collaboration with Stanford University’s Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law (CDRRL), The Omidyar Network Leadership Forum (ONLF), The Omidyar Network. This conference was also sponsored by The Asia 

 

Foundation and Pelaburan Mara and supported by Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia and Malaysia Tourism Centre (MAT1C).
While those in Malaysia are aware of ASEAN the OSCE is still not that well known. The OSCE or the Organization for
Security and Co-operation in Europe has a comprehensive approach to security that encompasses politico-military, economic and environmental, and human aspects. It therefore addresses a wide range of security-related concerns, including arms control, confidence- and security-building measures, human rights, national
minorities, democratization, policing strategies, counter-terrorism and economic and environmental activities.

H.E. Tan Sri Razali Ismail (Chairman of the Global Movement of Moderates Foundation & former President of the United Nations Security Council) spoke about the lessons learned in diplomacy and also his experience in this industry. He also mentioned that the Federation of Malaya joined the United Nations on 17 September 1957.

The idea of the project is to organize a one-day conference in Kuala Lumpur that would bring together experts and practitioners from both regions in order to compare the experience and challenges that Malaysia and Serbia faced during the chairmanship over two important regional organizations in turbulent times, as well as results they achieved. The lessons learned could be applied in further transformation of the regional organizations which are based on consensus decision making.

For Tomorrow’s Leaders Summit this program was especially important as the Co-Chairman, Mr Shafizan Johari moderated the important session on ASEAN-OSCE 2015: Reflections On A Year Of Chairmanship.

H. E. Mr Jovan Jovanovic (Advisor to OSCE Chairman) spoke about the future of OSCE and its challenges. He said that the OSCE must adapt to today’s needs for effective peace operations. It needs more planning resources. He also said that one of the challenges of OSCE is on the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in eastern Ukraine.

They spoke about the future of ASEAN, challenges ASEAN faced and how they are trying to solve the problems. Other than that Mr Herizal Hazri also stressed on the problems related to the Rohingya. He also said that Rohingya people are the most persecuted refugees in the world. Rohingya are an ethnic Muslim group in the majority Buddhist country and make up around one million of the total 50 million population.

Emmerson spoke about the issues and prospects of ASEAN and the relationships between China and US. Prof Donald K. Emmerson also mentioned that ASEAN is now China’s fourth largest destination for outward investment and its third-largest source of foreign direct investment. Two-way investment is targeted to reach USD 150 billion by 2020.
