SARAWAK youths who constitute about 42% of the population are more interested in music and sports than in politics.
Social Development and Urbanisation Assistant Minister Larry Sng said a youth survey carried out between February and July last year showed that only one quarter of respondents were interested in the political developments of the country.
Nonetheless, they were well informed on current developments in the country and overseas through the social network, newspaper and television, he said.
“Less than a quarter are interested in general news, a quarter in business and a quarter in Sarawak Corridor Of Renewable Energy,” he told a press conference in Kuching yesterday.
Earlier, Sng announced that the Social Development and Urbanisation Ministry in collaboration with Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) would hold this year’s state-level Youth Assembly on March 18 at the centre at 2pm.
Some 5,000 people are expected to attend the event themed “Build the Future on the Present Success”.
Various activities would be held from now on in every district that will lead up to the culmination of the assembly that would be declared open by Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.
The highlight of the assembly would be the presentation of awards to youths in recognition of their work or social involvement, he said.
“There are eight awards namely Anugerah Ikon Belia, Anugerah Jasa Belia, Anugerah Belia (Sukan), Anugerah Belia (Kebudayaan/Kesenian), Anugerah Belia (Kemahiran), Anugerah Persatuan Belia Cemerlang, Anugerah Belia Wira (Tani Penyelamat/Nelayan/Penternak) and Anugerah Belia OKU,” he said.
Sng said supporting events such as those aimed at instilling the spirit of volunteerism and community work would be held at 8am on March 5 in Padungan, Kampung Bintawa Hilir and Kampung Jinok near Kuching.
He said a new youth recreational centre at Kuching Civic Centre would be launched at 8am on March 12. The facility is meant to get more youths into activities such as cycling, wall climbing, basketball and futsal.
On March 19 and 20, the ministry in collaboration with Glen Reagh Sdn Bhd would hold Tomorrow’s Leaders’ Summit to expose youths to business opportunities and how to strive to create a high income society, he said.
