“It’s the fire in my eyes, and the flash of my teeth, the swing in my waist, and the joy in my feet. I’m a woman phenomenally. It’s in the click of my heels, the bend of my hair, the palm of my hand, the need of my care, ‘Cause I’m a woman phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, that’s me. ”

~ Maya Angelou ~

Women encounter challenges every day. Apart from sharing their communities, struggles over limited resources like jobs, many systematically face discrimination simply by virtue of being female. Young women around the globe possess the collective power to change their lives, their communities and even the world that we live in. Alas, that potential is often disregarded.

International+Womens+DayInternational Women’s Day is annually held on the 8th of March to celebrate women’s achievements in the past, present and future days. It is a day when women are acknowledged for their accomplishments without regard to their individual division, nationality, ethnic, linguistic, cultural and economic background. It is also known as the United Nations (UN) Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace.

This Day aims to highlight the importance of creating conditions for the elimination of discrimination against women and their full as well as equal participation in social development. Since its celebration in early years, International Women’s Day has assumed a new global facet for women in developed and developing countries

The 2016 theme for International Women’s Day is ‘Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality’. The idea of this theme is to consider how to accelerate the 2030 Agenda, building momentum for the effective implementation of the new Sustainable Development Goals, especially goal number five -Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls- and number 4 –Ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning. The theme will also focus on new commitments under UN Women’s Step It Up initiative and other existing commitments on gender equality, women’s empowerment and women’s human rights.

Int+Women's+Day+logoThe World Assembly of Youth (WAY) believe that empowerment for women and girls are vital to the development of societies. Women and girls that are empowered to basic education are better equipped to fulfil their potential and contribute their best effort to the societies. They are essential for a sustainable development and constructive progress of all of their family members, the household, communities and their nation as a whole. By achieving gender equality, sustainable development will be inclusive leading to a balance in every aspect at all levels of the societies.

So, let us this year step it up together in both promoting and espousing the practice of gender equality in every of our daily activity.
